Dear Members,

How have you all been? I hope all has been well with you.

It has been an exciting semester so far, and there have been extensive changes and exciting innovations made. True, some events have been popular and others less so, but the main thing is that our German Language Society is expanding and improving. We have had many exciting events and developments which I would love to update all of you about.

Events and activities that we have organised so far (as I've said, some extremely successfully) :

Welcome Tea for the German Society
Elections for the Committee +byelections to replace VP

Stammtisch - Oktoberfest
SEP Sharing Session
Das Leben der Anderen Movie Screening

In addition, the EXCO have been active as well:

Leadership Training Camp at Pulau Ubin
Welcome Delegation for Swiss visitors
Thursday CCA points allocation and framework talk

Also, with special thanks to ISEC, the German Society organised the

I would like to thank Sheena and Wei'an especially for helping me in this major event, and special thanks must go to ISEC and their EXCO members.

As President, I assure you of the continued efforts and events to come. Thank you for your support, and let's have an excellent semester 2 later. Special thanks also to Valerie from the IRO as well as all the teachers who have assisted our initiatives, especially Herr Doepel during the SEP Sharing Session.

As of now,

Good Luck for your Examinations and All the Best!

Movie Screening: "Das Leben der Anderen"

Hallo Mitglieder!

The German Society is organizing yet another event just for you! For those who contributed to the success of Stammtisch and SEP Sharing Session, a BIG THANK YOU!

This time round, we will be having a German Movie Screening Session!

Date: 27th October '09 (Tuesday), 7:30pm to 9:30pm
Venue: NUS Library Lecture Theatrette 2
Movie Title: “Das Leben der Anderen”.

Here is the summary:
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's movie debut focuses on the horrifying, sometimes unintentionally funny system of observation in the former East Germany. In the early 1980s, the successful dramatist Georg Dreyman and his longtime companion Christa-Maria Sieland, a popular actress, are big intellectual stars in the socialist state, although they secretly don't always think loyal to the party line. One day, the Minister of Culture becomes interested in Christa, so the secret service agent Wiesler is instructed to observe and sound out the couple, but their life fascinates him more and more.

Those who are interested, please RSVP by sending us an email to frag.mal.uns@gmail.com.
Please also try to be punctual so that we will be able to start the movie on time!
On behalf of the German Society, we thank you once again, and we hope to see you next Tuesday!

Stammtisch: Oktoberfest 19th Oct '09

Hallo zusammen!

Yesterday we had our very first Stammtisch of the year in conjunction with the Oktoberfest!
Taking place at Munchie Monkeys, we were provided with various delicious German Foods such as Schintzel and Bratwurst, served with French fries and accompanied by beer!
We also had a surprise Birthday celebration, although a day late, for our Vice-President Wei Ting!!
With such good food and very fun people, it goes without saying that we all enjoyed ourselves very much! In fact, to our surprise, everyone was soooooo busy socializing, that we hardly had time to play any of the many card and board games prepared for the event! (before MM chased us out at 10pm)

We hope those of you who came down had an enjoyable evening and thanks for making this event a success! As for those who could not make it this time, do come and join us for future events! =)

Please check out the DDS Facebook group for more photos!! THANKS!

Stammtisch & SEP Sharing Session

Hallo Mitglieder!

The German Society is organizing 2 back-to-back activities just for you! For those who attended our German Learning Session, we hope that you had an enriching time.

This time round, we will conduct 2 events, held on 2 consecutive days in Week 10 of this Academic Year. The details are as follows:-

1) Stammtisch. What is it? For those who are learning German 1, you might be able to recognise "Tisch", but are still clueless on what is it. For those taking higher level German, you might know what it is, but have you experienced it in Germany yet?

Fret not! Because the German Language Society will be having our Annual Stammtisch, held in Munchie Monkey! So what is Stammtisch exactly? It is not easily translated into English but it means something like "regular's table" or "regular get-together". So what do you do? You sit together and basically, you talk about anything you want. Of course, conversation goes hand in hand with food. So it will be an exciting time where you get to meet fellow members and talk about, basically anything! We will be having German Food as well, with a DJ on hand to play some music whilst the event is being carried out!

However, please note that this event is strictly for members only. If you are a non-member, you can sign up for membership when you come. Freshies pay $10, while the rest pay $8. Before you come, please RSVP by emailing us @ frag.mal.uns@gmail.com with your name, and also indicate if you are a beer drinker. Once again, the summarized details are as follows:-

Event: Stammtisch
Date: 19 October 2009, Monday
Time: 730pm to 930pm
Venue: Munchie Monkey
Note: We have reserved limited places. So please do RSVP as soon as possible! Please indicate your name and whether you are a beer drinker in your email to us.

2) The German Society is organizing a SEP/Immersion Sharing Session! We have invited students who have gone for exchanges and immersions to Germany to share their experiences. We will be giving advice on administrative matters and also be answering any queries about the SEP and Immersion! Also, we will be providing German food and drinks for the event. Please do come down to attend and support us! It is a great opportunity if you are considering going for an immersion or exchange. You can drop us an email at frag.mal.uns@gmail.com if you have queries. We would appreciate it if you could RSVP. See you there!

Event: SEP/Immersion Sharing Session
Date: 20 October 2009, Tuesday
Time: 730pm to 930pm
Venue: Yusof Ishak House Function Room 3
Note: Please do RSVP

On behalf of the German Language Society, we hope to see you there! =)

Introducing Music Artist: Wir sind Helden

"Wir sind Helden" (translated "We are Heroes") is a German alternative rock band which debuted in 2002. It has often been considered similar to the "Neue Deutsche Welle" (new German wave). Their debut single "Guten Tag" reached #53 on the German singles charts and got significant airplay on MTV Europe, although the band did not yet have a record deal at that time.

As recommended by Wei'an (our Honorary General Secretary), the song below is "Wenn es passiert" (when it happens), released in 2006. Enjoy!

Lyrics:
Ein Herzschlag nur für mich
A heartbeat just for me
und die, die bei mir sind
and those who are with me
Augen auf, schaut euch das an
Open your eyes, look at this
whoever doesn't shed tears for this, will be blind tomorrow (lit. transl. = who does not have tears for this...)
Wenn ihr das nicht liebt, was dann
If you do not love this, what then
Jeder liebe das so viel er kann
everyone loves this as much as they can
Ein Blitzschlag nur für mich
A lightningbolt just for me
und die, die bei mir sind
and those who are with me
Wer jetzt zweifelt sieht nicht klar
whoever hesitates now, does not see clearly
Disregarding how much of it is taken away by time
Wer jetzt blinzelt war nicht da
Whoever blinks now, was not here

Vielleicht ist es wirklich nur ein Jahr
Maybe it's really just one year
But I never want to ask where I was
Wo war ich als das wahr war
Where was I when this was real

Ich will da sein
I want to be here
Wenn die Zeit einfriert
When time freezes
Ich will da sein
I want to be here
Wenn sie explodiert
When it explodes
Und wenn sich dabei mein Verstand verliert
Even if my sanity is lost with it (or in the process of it)
Ich will da sein
I want to be here
Wenn es passiert
When it happens

Ein Herz, ein Schlag, ein Blitz
A heart, a beat, a flash of lightning
(note: in German the lyrics are more meaningful, because Herzschlag=Heartbeat, while Blitzschlag=Thunderbolt, thus 'Schlag' reconciles 'heart' and 'lightning')
für die, die einsam sind
for those who are lonely
Augen auf, schaut euch das an
Open your eyes, look at this
Do you really want to count how time slips away
Wenn die Welt auch so etwas kann
If the world too can do something like that

Vielleicht ist es wirklich nur ein Jahr
.
Maybe it is really just a year.

Culture: Münchner Oktoberfest

The Oktoberfest is a traditional festival celebrated in Munich, Germany since 1810. It started as a way to finish up beer of the previous brewing season, before the start of the new brewing season.

This years Oktoberfest in München stretches from the 19. September to the 4. October 2009.

Introducing Music Artist: Marit Larsen

Marit Larsen is a Norwegian singer and songwriter and previously a part of pop duo M2M (I'm sure you all know this one!). In 2006, she released her first solo album and her second in 2008.
Her song "If a song could get me you" is currently number 1 on the German music charts. Although she's not a german singer, nor are her songs in German, I've decided to still put it up because it's a very sweet song. =) Viel Spass! (Die Aussage ist einfach schoen!)

Ein kalter Wind
A cold wind
Die Welt erstarrt
The world petrified
Die Sonne ist erfroren

Ich trag's in mir
I carry it in me
Über 1000 Meere
Over a thousand seas
Zurück zu dir
Back to you
Zurück zu uns
Back to us
Wir dürfen unseren Glauben nicht verlieren
We cannot lose our faith
Vertrau mir
Trust me

Wir müssen nur noch 1000 Meere weit
We only need another 1000 seas more (lit. transl: we must only 1000 seas further)
Durch 1000 dunkle Jahre ohne zeit
Through 1000 dark years without time
1000 Sterne zieh'n vorbei
1000 Stars pass over
Wir müssen nur noch 1000 Meere weit
We only need another 1000 seas more
Noch 1000-mal durch die Unendlichkeit
Another 1000 times through eternity
Dann sind wir endlich frei
Then we're finally free

Irgendwo ist der Ort
Somewhere is the place
Den nur wir beide kennen
Only known to both of us (lit. transl: that only we both know)
Lief alles anders als gedacht
If all turned out different than expected (lit. transl: Went everything different than thought)
Der Puls in den Adern
The pulse in the veins
Ist viel zu schwach
Is far too weak
But somehow our hearts pull us through the night (lit. transl: ...beat us through the night-->conotation: heart beat, but also "durchschlagen"=pull through, survive)
Vertrau mir
Trust me

Wir müssen nur noch 1000 Meere weit
We only need another 1000 seas more
Durch 1000 dunkle Jahre ohne zeit
Through 1000 dark years without time
1000 Sterne zieh'n vorbei
1000 Stars pass over
Wir müssen nur noch 1000 Meere weit
We only need another 1000 seas more
Noch 1000-mal durch die Unendlichkeit
Another 1000 times across the eternity
Dann sind wir endlich frei
Then we're finally free

Niemand und Nichts nehmen wir mit
We take no one and nothing with us (lit. transl: No one and nothing take we along)
And someday we'll look back on now

1000 Meere weit
1000 seas away
1000 Jahre ohne Zeit
1000 years without time
Noch 1000 Meere weit
Another 1000 seas away
1000 Sterne zieh'n vorbei
1000 stars pass over
Vorbei
over
Lass dich zu mir treiben
Let yourself drift to me
Ich lass mich zu dir treiben
I let myself drift to you

Wir müssen nur noch 1000 Meere weit
We only need another 1000 seas more
Durch 1000 dunkle Jahre ohne zeit
Through 1000 dark years without time
1000 Sterne zieh'n vorbei
1000 Stars pass over
Wir müssen nur noch 1000 Meere weit
We only need another 1000 seas more
Noch 1000-mal durch die Unendlichkeit
Another 1000 times through eternity
Dann sind wir endlich frei
Then we're finally free

Lass dich zu mir treiben
Let yourself drift to me
Ich lass mich zu dir treiben
I let myself drift to you
1000 Meere weit.
1000 seas more.

Btw they have an english version of the song, where the lyrics are slightly different to flow more smoothly in English, but the meaning is essentially almost the same.

and here's a link to their latest MV "Automatisch" ("Automatic")

German Language Society Elections, 09/10

Hallo meine Lieben!

Having a great response from our members, both nominees (9 in total, please see below for their pretty photos!) as well as voters, the German Language Society Elections for academic year 09/10 were held yesterday evening, 31. August 2009, with much success.
Here's a short recap, for all those who missed out on the evenings suspense-filled entertainment and fun!

Naturally, the nominees put up a tough fight against one another, pitting their skills and flaunting their charisma, to win over the hearts of our voters. It's no question that every single one of them had reason enough (be it 3, 5, or perhaps even 20) to be voted for, if not for the limited number of available positions of course...

Even after 2 hours of stunning soliloquies, interesting Q&As, intense name-scribbling and enthusiastic vote-counting, the results were only certain after a second round of votings for the three-way tying spot of the Project Director. (Yes, even though there were 2 vacancies!)
Nevertheless, we did eventually arrive at a final outcome.

So here's what you've been reading this for! The nominees who were able to captivate voters
(in one way or another) in this years elections are as follows:

Vice-President: Wong Wei Ting
Project Director 1: He Yajie
Project Director 2: Tan Xi'en Rachel
Marketing Director: Vasu Gulati
Editor: Anna Chong

Herzlichen Glü
ckwunsch to the newly elected EXCO members!! You fought a hard battle. Please give your best effort for the up-coming year ahead! :)
And of course, a big thank you to all nominees (regardless of whether you won or not!) and voters for participating in this event! It could not have been held without you...

Lastly, we look forward to your continuous support!

Mit lieben Gr
üssen,
Your Editor.

I feel that my greatest strengths lie in my communication, interaction and interpersonal skills. When asked about my penultimate goal in life, my usual answer is “I want to meet and interact with as many people as possible, exchange knowledge and promote one’s ideas to gain a better insight to life”.

I have just finished a two month internship with tenCube (an NUS start up) where I was involved in marketing cum business development. I was given the opportunity to interact and negotiate with big name companies from all over the world in order to promote their product and find new business avenues. Through my internship and my involvement in synQ (NUS Deejays group) I have met a lot of different, interesting and even tough to handle people. Since both activities revolved around providing some sort of service to people, I have gained a better understanding of what people want and what people need. Hence, if I were to become the Marketing Director I would feel quite confident in liaising with other societies and organisations.

As the Marketing Director, I would like to promote our society and take it to a higher level. For example, not all students who wanted to learn German got into the course. By taking the publicity levels of our events to a higher level, I would like such individuals to come down and interact with us, be a part of the ‘German Culture’ of NUS even though they might not be able to converse in German. This idea stems from the fact that the word of mouth has limited effectiveness. These interested students need not become members hence need not be given CCA points. Thus, we shall only attract people who are passionate about learning German.

This is just one of the ideas that I have as of yet. I am still contemplating over suggesting changes to our Stammtisch – for example having more of a musical aspect to it rather than plain board games (and maybe negotiating with Munchie Monkey to provide two free drinks rather than just one).

Matric Number : U085856N

Desired Position: 1) Project Director or 2) Marketing director

I love German Language when I first met it in my studies of piano music theory. As we know, those terms like ‘Zart’ (soft) ‘Traurig’(sad) is used by the composer when they wrote the piano score. I have played a song named Aufschwung by Robert Schumann, a very well known German composer for my piano performance certificate exam, and its took me some times to do some research and interpret it in order to present it in the examination hall. In order to fulfill my dream to learn German, I have bided this lag1201 with 800 points from general account and even give up others CCA which clashes with my lecture slots :’(

One year back, I have visited Europe country during the vacation and I simply love the environment and culture there. By joining this German language society and becoming a Project Manager may helps me to know more about Germany. I hope to organize program (stammtisch, cooking, singing and even dancing) in order to experience their culture.

I have experienced in organizing event during secondary school and JC by organized charity event to help the poor one in school, finding sponsor for them, and even organizing school trip to Cameron Highlands. Besides that, I am a Drama Club advisor in school, I have learned how to organize stage performance and concerts too. I am here to ensure that those CCA that I done before will surely help me to master the position as a Project Director as well as Marketing Director.

Moreover, I am a responsible person who can give in 100% whenever I have been given a job. I am nice and friendly too. Frankly, I join German Language Society is partly because of CCA points (this guarantee I can do my job well…), but yet I hope through this society we can learn and understand more about German. We grow and exchange experience through this precious society and brings the culture of Germany “ON” in NUS.

Full name: Wong Wei Ting

Roles interested in: Vice President

My journey with German language started 8 years ago when I was given the chance to participate in the Language Elective Programme (LEP) in secondary school. My passion for the language was fuelled as I learnt more about the history and culture of Germany. As I spent the first half of 2009 in Germany for Student Exchange Programme and subsequently for an internship, I got to experience much of Germany - people, language, history and culture, something which I wish to share with fellow German enthusiasts in Singapore. All these have spurred me on to run for the position of Vice President. As a Business student, organising, planning and managing many projects are part and parcel of my curriculum. Previous leadership positions as Secretary of DDS, Head of fellowship committee, etc have also prepared me well and makes me a suitable candidate for this position. Besides these, I am a very easygoing and sociable person who enjoys meeting people to exchange cultures and experiences. Together with my passion to share knowledge and German culture with fellow members, I believe that DDS will be more than a platform for German language learners.

I've had an interest in the German Language and culture ever since I was a child, and I immediately regretted it when I turned down a chance to take up German as a third language in Secondary school. I thus jumped at the chance to learn German in University. Ever since enrolling in the Language Preparation Programme, I've not looked back and have been greatly enjoying learning German and am greatly looking forward to my exchange programme in Germany next year. Apart from this interest and enthusiasm in German and the German culture, I've also had substantial experience in holding leadership positions in various groups and committees, as well as organizing events ever since secondary school. As such, I believe that I will be able to efficiently and effectively take on a role in the German Society Committee, and will carry out any duties entrusted to me with the best of my ability. I also greatly enjoy working with people, and I believe that being in the EXCO will be a great chance for me too serve the society, helping it grow and improve, and also for all of us to better understand the German culture and better learn the language.

German Language Society Welcome Tea, 09/10 - 24th August 2009

German Language Society Welcome Tea, 09/10 - 24th August 2009
Dear Members and potential members of our Society,

Today's turnout for the welcome tea and the support for the German Language Society were both incredible. I would like to thank everybody for their kind support for the Welcome Tea. In fact, in my opinion, this is the best turnout for the German Language Society in 4 years.

First, special thanks to the teachers Frau Niemann and Herr Doepel who provided extra refreshments and drinks for all the students.

Second, my sincerest thanks to my General Secretary Wei'an and Treasurer Xi Ling for helping me in this big event.

Last, but not the least, a big thank you for all the students and participants who attended the Welcome Tea today and the elections briefing.

There are a few issues :

1. With immediate effect, the elections notice is up.

All candidates are to send to frag.mal.uns@gmail.com their Name, Matric Number, Biodata, Two Posts that they are applying for, and Reasons why they should be elected.

A soft copy photograph in a word document or as an attachment would be welcome, but this is optional and not compulsory.

Send in your application before 2359hrs Sunday, 30th August.

Your application will be posted on the society blog.

Once sent, the applications are valid.

2. The elections will be held next week, 31st August 2009 from 8PM to 9:30PM. In lieu of potential tutorial clashes, the event will start formally at 8PM and not at the 7:30PM time mentioned.

The venue is now unknown till the teachers book us a room/ place, because the turnout has been much bigger than expected and we can expect quite a number of voters.

I will inform all members of the venue once it is confirmed.

The candidates will give a five minutes speech, followed by a 5-10 min Q and A session. Questions will be asked.

Only after all candidates have spoken will the voting commence.

3. Many email enquiries and blog tag enquiries ask: how do we sign up as members if we missed the welcome tea?

- You can come to the elections and sign up. First years are charged $10, and second to final year students are charged $8. You must provide your NAME, MATRIC NUMBER, VALID EMAIL and CONTACTS when you sign up. Only members get the benefits discussed in the welcome tea.

Once again, thank you for your generous support, and I am sure that this academic year 2009-2010 will be an excellent one.

Candidates for the German Language Society Elections

Candidates for the German Language Society Elections

Please submit your details to frag.mal.uns@gmail.com if you are standing for election. Thank you!

1.Name: Pau Xi Ling
2. Matric Number: U073969H
3. Year: 2
4. German level: 2
5. Position interested: 1st choice Treasurer, 2nd choice General Secretary
6. Personal bio: I'm a 2nd year Chemistry major at the Faculty of Science and have a great passion for the Arts (Performing and Literary). I'm a avid fan of classical music (especially deutsche Lieder) and poetry, and that was the reason why I took up German in university. When I'm not working in laboratories, I like to sing and accompany myself on the piano, discover German/English poems (especially those set to music by classical composers), blog about music, attend concerts, and immerse myself in the beauty of nature.
7. What I can contribute to the society: Introduce ways to expand membership, as well as new activities to facilitate interaction between exchange students and local German language learners.

1.Name: Shawn Seah
2. Matric Number: U0601442H
3. Year: 3, coming on year 4
4. German level: 6
5. Position interested: 1st choice President, 2nd choice Vice President
6. Personal bio:
Hello! I am Shawn and I studied German 5 and 6 at NUS, a long time ago. I am from FASS, studying Economics. I like German as I studied it at O levels and fell in love with it, and till today I watch TV Total and listen to Nena and Oli P's music. My favourites on youtube last semester were "The Next Uri Geller" and "Die Besten Mentalisten der Welt".
I am also interested in history (especially modern European history and European intellectual history), philosophy, blogging, football, bowling, badminton and chess.
7. What I can contribute to the society:
I have a two-pronged vision for our society - that at the same time it can become a mass membership organisation (that means more than 50 people), while at the micro level people also contribute freely and participate in things that they love.
For example, I will encourage many to come for German movie screenings and Stammtisch, our main activities; also I will invite interested students for a tour of the library for the best German literature and share youtube videos (zum Beispiel, Morta Della - total lustig). Thank you for reading! -Shawn.

Chen Wei'an
Fac: Engineering
Interests: Reading (when i'm free of any scholastic obligations,i.e. in the holidays.) Some sports, youtube-ing
Post: 1) General Secretary 2) Vice President
I THINK that I'm a very approachable person. I feel I thrive well with team activities, and I can be a team player. Why did I chose General Secretary? Other than the fact that the 'General' scope is so vague and I figured I am the man for the job, generally, and I have past experiences with being in a committee in sec school/Junior college which could prove useful. And I love to meet new people, and I like to make people laugh which is a plus point.

Name: LIM Yin Long
Matric: U064583J
Level of german: level 1 in NUS + 2 beginner level in Germany
Fac: BIZ
Interests and what post you want: Vice President, President

About myself: I am the Project Director of German Language Society now. After my SEP in Germany, I realized how unwilling I am to break the linkage with that wonderful land. To make myself closer with Germany, the interesting culture, language and people, I joined the EXCO last semester. However, I am quite disappointed especially for the low turnout rate for most of the events. I thought a lot of students are actually interested in learning about German culture, that's why they are taking or took German. Well, I am ambitious and hope that I can really do something to promote the German culture among the NUS students. A lot of stuff have to be done, include building up a closer relationship with German-related organizations, organizing information sharing session/exhibitions.

Back to the topic, I'm responsible, initiative and willing to commit. I believe these are also essential for a leader. =)

Movie Screening on 23rd March/ Filmveranstaltung am 23. März

Hello everybody,

The German Language Society will be having a movie screening next Monday, 23rd March 2009!

Title:
Wo ist Fred?Add Image

Venue: Central Library Theatre 1

Time: 6:30 - 8:30PM

Sypnosis: In order to catch a basketball from the favorite team of his girlfriend's spoiled son, Fred (Schweiger) poses as a numb, wheelchair-bound fan. But when he catches the ball, he also catches the attention of young, attractive filmmaker Denise (Lara), who wants to feature an invalid fan in an image film for the team. Fred has to keep playing his role, while real invalid and really furious fan Ronny (Herbst) might call his bluff at any moment. Worse, still, love sets in...
===========================================================

Her name is Zhang Xiaoou.

She is smart, warm, and brings others so much happiness and hope.

She is graduating from NUS this year, with as many plans about the future as many of us.

However, on 4th March 2009, her life took a fatal turn. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a life-threatening disease that will post a staggering SGD 400,000 medical bill to her middle-income family (Xiaoou's mother is unemployed. Her father is a normal worker with average income of SGD 400 per month).

You may not know her, but she is just one other dream chaser like you and me. Any dollar from you lights up a light. Please lend Xiao'ou a helping hand so that she could continue with her journey of life and embrace her future!

Wann: 10. Feb, Dienstag, 18:00-20:00

Wo: Theatre 1 @ Zentralbibliothek

Was: Die Letzten Tagen (Sophie Scholl, 115 min.)
