Candidates for the 1st Elections AY11/12

Candidate 1
Name: Chen Zhongheng
Course / Year of Study: Statistics Year 2
Level of German: German for Academic Purpose

Interested Poitions:
1st Choice: Vice President
2nd Choice: Treasurer

Bio:
Hi! I’m Zhongheng from German Society Marketing sub-com. I’m a stats student as well as a German learner. I am fascinated by this language and everything related to it: music, culture, history and so on. German Society provides me with this opportunity to get to know all those “Deutsche” stuff as well as the amazingly fun people. I think some of you met me during the choir practices and other GS events. I would really like to promote myself a little bit more in case you have no impression of me at all or, worse, bad impressions :P. But I realize I don’t have much to say about myself. Like most other international students, when I started doing CCAs my only concern was to find something I don’t hate that offers a lot of points. But now when I’m doing the German Society events, the points are the least I would think of. I’m glad that I have German and German Society, they are my break from the frustrating Mathematics and Economics modules.

Enough for the emotional part. As I have been part of many GS events this semester, I am now quite familiar with the operation of the society. And I am confident that I can take on the responsibility of vice president and give you guys more interesting events in the coming semesters. As I’ll be going to Switzerland for exchange in the 2nd sem in next academic year, I can only be in the society for 1 sem. But I promise, I’ll make the next semester worthy of your vote. Thank you.

Candidate 2
Full Name: Liu Yiqing
Year / Course of Study: Year 1, Business Administration (Accountancy)
Level of German: 2

Interested Positions:
1st choice: General Secretary
2nd choice: Marketing Director

Personal Bio:
Hi everyone! I’m Liu Yiqing, and you can probably see the rest from my details. Anyway, just a few interesting things about myself: I really like German and am still trying to make myself better at it :P I’m neither an introvert nor an extrovert, so perhaps you can say that I have split personalities hmmm. I know a little bit of martial arts, you can fight me if you have no martial arts background. And I like playing the piano. Anyone who’s bored and wants to speak German or play piano with somebody, please come and find me! :D

What & how you can contribute to the society:
I’ve had some experience in leadership positions in the past (plus in the current year too), having been a treasurer and publicity head before. This is a society I seriously like a lot and am quite on about it, so if nothing else, at least I can try to make other exco members happy by my enthusiasm :P

For some reason, I’ve always felt that I’m pretty efficient in getting things done so choose me if you like speed. As I know from previous experiences, the secretary is usually the busiest person in the committee, having to help the various directors and to connect to the students. This is something I really enjoy doing, and I’m sure that I can do a good job. I like organising and planning events and I can commit to it (except if I go on SEP in sem 2 though). I’m really friendly and hopefully this can help in attracting more members into the team during CCA fair.

That’s about it! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me during election day (or anytime if you want).

Candidate 3
Full Name: Moahan Murugappan
Year & Course of Study: 3rd year Science
Level of German: 4

Interested Position:
1.Treasurer

Personal Bio:
I'm a year 3 physics major, who has a passion for the German language. My 1st encounter with it was when I went for a summer programme in Ulm, Baden Wuettenberg, after my 1st year. There is where I first started learning German. I continued learning German ever since, and liking it more as I learn.

I've been in the society for about only a year now. As a sub-committee member, I usually appear for most of the events every now and then, to help out and make the crowd. The German society provided me with an opportunity to speak German outside classrooms, and to mingle with interesting people.

To get a little more involved in the club, I'm going to opt for the position of treasurer, the only position I'm interested in. I'm going to be a 4th year student next year, days are going to be hectic than ever before, CCA points are not going to be useful, but I'll try to perform the task that I'll be given, for the love of the club.

Possible contributions:
Just to help out. Learn the responsibilities of the position that i may be offered and do the job. Doing the job itself would be my contribution.

Candidate 4
Full Name: Feng Fei
Year & Course of Study: Year 1, Mechanical Engineering
Level of German: German 4

Interested Positions (1st & 2nd choices):
1st: vice president
2nd: Project Director

Personal Bio:
I have started learning German in my IB years. It was an interesting yet lonely journey, because we only had three students in class. This semester I picked up German 4 in NUS and it has been proven to be my favorite subject, given the lively classroom interaction with the teachers and students. I have joined German Language Society, since I first came to NUS. Having taken part in the various activities organised by German Language Society, I have not only been exposed to the richness of the German culture, but also made good friends, with whom I share the common enthusiasm for the language. As such, I sense the urge and passion this time to serve back to German Language Society.

Apart from German Language Society, I have also joined the KE VII Hall Squash Team. Squash is another interest of mine I have been keeping, which reaffirms that I am a person very much driven my my interests. Besides, I am a member of Engin Club Sports Committee, through which I have learnt interpersonal and organizational skills. Based on my past experiences like the organization of a squash tournament and a blood drive as well as being a class chairman and class committee member in my secondary school and IB days, I find myself fond of interacting and cooperating with people.

What & how you can contribute to the society:
Being a Year 2 student next year allows me to have both some experience in this society and also a reasonable amount time to be devoted to it. Over the past two semesters, I have gained adequate familiarity of the society and its functions. Thus, I will be able to help out in the planning and organisation of each activity.

Candidate 5
Full Name: Loh Yi Cheng, John
Year & Course of Study: Year 1 Business and University Scholars' Programme student
Level of German: Since I have not taken on any German modules in NUS, my proficiency in German can be reasonably gauged from an external course I took at Cambridge School of Education about 2 years back.

Interested Positions (1st & 2nd choices):
1st choice: Vice President
2nd choice: Treasurer

Personal Bio:
By way of introduction, I am currently a Year 1 Business and University Scholars Programme student. Since I have not taken on any German modules in NUS, my proficiency in German can be reasonably gauged from an external course I took at Cambridge School of Education about 2 years back. Allow me to provide you with some background information about myself. Firstly, I stumbled onto the German language as I was contemplating which language to take on as a third language. I chose the language because I felt it was unique as several aspects of the language share similarities to the English language. I am also an avid sportsman, with a liking for team sports and also hit the gym twice a week.

I am also an avid stock trader and going through financial reports while analyzing stock market trends have also been one of my passions. My interest in finance is one of the reason I chose to major in Business and with my knowledge from my accounting modules, I am confident that the role of Treasurer would be very suitable for me. At the same time, I am also prudent and meticulous – at one point after ‘A’ levels, I was tutoring up to 11 students. I did a detailed financial plan and set a target amount of money that I needed to earn monthly in order to fulfill my goal of earning enough to pay off my university education. By tracking my expenses closely, I was able to exceed my target by almost $1,500 by the time I matriculated.

As I am not really interested in the other positions, I decided to give the leadership position a shot. A leader has to possess both knowledge and competence. As the Vice Project Director for the NUS Matriculation Fair, I oversee a team of 19 committee members. Coordinating such a large group is certainly not easy and I hope that this exemplifies my competence as a leader. However, I do admit that I am certainly lacking on the ‘knowledge’ aspect due to my limited German. While I continue to work on improving my German, I am not sure as to how I will be received by the German teachers who are in charge of this society. Nevertheless, I hope to appeal to the members for their vote by identifying the areas of change they can expect by electing me as their leader. I have humbly thought through certain aspects of the society, garnered from my conversations during the society’s events I have attended so far. Do pardon me if most have already been thought through and deemed unfeasible. I had hoped that this would serve as a framework from which the society can build itself upon and that it be fruitful for the eventual President/Vice President in the event that I am not elected.

At the same time, I remain flexible to other positions in which the electorate deems fit and thank you for taking the time to read through my application. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for being part of the society despite not having taken any German modules. I look forward to having many more fulfilling years ahead in the society.

Herzlichen Gruessen,
lohyc
John Loh

Bio:
I have been the Vice President and Project Director in German Society for the past two years, Organised and monitored numerous events for the society. During my time as Vice President and Project Director, I led the organising committees for German Day 2010, stammtisches, CLS Day, German – learning sessions and 2 German Movie Screening events attracting many participants from all over NUS. My ability to lead and manage has being well tested and tuned.

My experiences and what I can contribute to the society:
With my experience in German Society and knowledge on the events organised by the society, I will be able to provide guidance for my executive committee members and lead them to scale greater heights. With NUS German Society holding the rights to organise next year’s events, my leadership experience and my ability to rally the members towards the ultimate goal of presenting unforgettable events to all the tertiary education students, will be useful. This session will allow the new incoming executive committee to build bonds and foster good working relationships. Strong working relationships will ensure that the events next year organised by the society will be ones of the best ever held.

Candidate 7
Name: Zhang Lu
Year: Year One
German Level: One

Interested Posts:
Vice-President

Personal Bio:
I am the Project Director of the current committee. I organized various events for the society such as Stammtisch, Movie Screening and SEP Sharing Session. Being the only Year One in the committee, I have certainly learnt a lot from my fellow members. I still remember how it was like when I ran for the previous election a year ago. Like many of the candidates, inexperienced yet passionate, I also talked about changes I wanted to bring to the society. One of them was to attract more native German exchange students. After trying out myself, I realized how difficult it is to implement changes, especially the right type of changes. But I am glad that I managed to deliver my promise by introducing quite a number of German native students to our events and forged strong friendship with them. My experience in the society has formed part of the fond memories that made me choose to stay on. All these experiences have matured my thinking and will
certainly aid me in contributing to the society in future.

I was also the Vice-Director for the NUSSU Business Committee for the second semester. Our department sourced for student discounts from companies and organizations to bring benefits to the NUS students and staff. My team was actively involved in publicizing our partner companies by setting up booths in bazaars, holding lucky draws, sending email blasts and collaborating with the Ridge. I was also part of the organizing
committee of BizAsia, NUS Entrepreneurship Society. We organized programs for international students from top universities such as Beijing University, National Taiwan University and University of Chile to come to NUS for a series of forums, seminars and company visits. Being the sponsorship executive, I drafted proposals and sent emails to the various companies and went down to pitch our ideas. All these experience has honed my leadership skills and served as precious lessons for me to learn and grow.

I was also very active in my JC and secondary CCAs back then. I was in the Student Council Exco and was part of the organizing committee for many projects. I was also in Chinese Orchestra that clinched Gold with Honors. Therefore I believe I certainly have what it takes to contribute to the society. Having gone through a hectic year, I start to understand the importance of commitment and the sense of responsibility. I believe
there is no point doing many things, yet not committing to one. Therefore I do not have plans of joining any other CCAs in the coming semester should I be fortunate enough to be elected again.

I will certainly aid the President and other committee members in both external and internal matters, introducing necessary changes to ensure the normal operation of our society and at the same time continue to make our society more visible. And of course, most importantly, to allow our society’s members to enjoy and learn from their every experience with us!
