Oktoberfest Fiesta!

We held our Oktoberfest-themed Stammtisch last Saturday (27 October). Lots of beer and sausages were (of course!) consumed during the celebration. Besides, there were also other foods, such as Rösti and potato salad that we have made ourselves. German music was played all night, while we were having our BBQ.

We are glad that so many of you have come and we thank you for making this such a great event (: Below are some of the photos taken during our very own Oktoberfest. See you at the next Stammtisch! :D

Oktoberfest Fiesta!

Letzten Samstag (27.10.) hatten wir unseren auf Oktoberfest ausgerichteten Stammtisch. Mit viel Bier und vielen Würsten haben wir natürlich gefeiert. Außerdem gab es auch anderes Essen wie Rösti und Kartoffelnsalat, die wir selbst gekocht haben. Deutsche Musik wurden auch den ganzen Abend während der Grillparty gespielt.

Wir freuen uns, dass so viele gekommen sind und danken euch für den tollen Stammtisch(: Hier unten sind die Fotos unseres eigenen Oktoberfest! Bis nächsten Stammtisch! :D

SEP Sharing Session!

Considering going for SEP / internships / attachments in Germany or any German-speaking countries (e.g.: Switzerland / Austria)?

Feeling nervous, doubtful, and unsure about the application procedures and going to such a faraway country alone?

Or excitedly awaiting your trip to these countries?

The German Language Society (die Deutsche Sphäre) is organizing an informal sharing session, whereby students who have came back from Germany / German-speaking countries either on SEP and / or internships / attachments share their experiences, good and bad. Exchange students are also invited to share about your homeland with our local students. All members of die Deutsche Sphäre and students learning the German language are invited to attend this sharing session, listen to what these students have to say and ask any burning questions you may have!

The Opening Ceremony of the Exhibition “Advertising in Germany”

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held yesterday (16 October) in front of the Central Library. The Director and Head of Arts of Goethe Institute Singapore Dr. Ulrich Nowak, Head of Language Department of Goethe Institute Singapore Mrs. Felicitas Habouz and the director of NUS Centre for Language Studies Dr. Chan Wai Meng were there to grace the event as our guests-of-honour.

Firstly, Dr. Chan addressed everyone there and thanked the Goethe Institute for bringing the exhibition to NUS. The Vice-President of die deutsche Sphäre, which was a co-organizer of the exhibition in NUS, also spoke about the numerous exciting activities that the club has organized to date. After two students from German 5, Bingfang and Bess, have each delivered a speech, Dr. Nowak declared the exhibition open.

All guests-of-honour and visitors were invited to view the exhibition. Many of the German 5 students were also there to provide further explanation about the exhibition, so that all visitors, regardless of whether they understand german, would be able to understand and enjoy the interesting information and advertisements put up at the exhibition.

The German 5 students have worked in groups to collect background information on the different eras portrayed in the exhibition and have written and published texts on these informations in a WIKI. These were then recorded in both German and English. All visitors can download the Audioguide to this exhibition from the Internet and then listen to it as they view the exhibition.

The exhibition will remain in front of the library till 30 October. We would like to once again invite you to view this interesting exhibition.

Die Eröffnung der Ausstellung “Werbung in Deutschland”

Gestern (16. Oktober) hat die Eröffnung der Ausstellung vor der Zentralen Bibliothek stattgefunden. Institutsleitung und Leitung der Programmarbeit des Goethe-Institut Singapurs Dr. Ulrich Nowak, Leitung der Sprachabteilung des Goethe-Institut Singapurs Frau Felicitas Habouz und Direktor des Sprachzentrums (NUS Centre for Language Studies) Dr. Chan Wai Meng haben zur Eröffnung als Ehrengäste gekommen.

Zunächst hat Dr. Chan alle angeredet und dem Goethe-Institut für die Ausstellung gedankt. Die Vizepräsidentin der deutschen Sphäre, die diese Ausstellung mitorganisiert, hat danach über die Aktivitäten des Vereins gesprochen. Nachdem die Studenten des Deutsch 5-Kurses Bingfang und Bess jede eine Rede gehalten hatten, hat Dr. Nowak die Ausstellung eröffnet.

Dann machten alle Ehrengäste und Besucher einen Rundgang durch die Ausstellung. Viele der Studenten des Deutsch 5-Kurses waren auch dabei, um allen Besuchern über die Ausstellung zu erklären, damit alle die interresante Informationen und Plakate verstehen können.

Die Studenten haben im Deutsch 5-Kurs in früher gebildeten Gruppen Hintergrundinformationen über die dargestellten Zeiträume zusammen getragen und dann in einem WIKI kurze Informationstexte geschrieben und veröffentlicht. Diese Texte wurden auch in deutscher und englischer Sprache aufgenommen. Alle Besucher können sich die Audioführer zur Ausstellung im Internet runterladen und dann anhören, während sie sich die Ausstellung ansehen.

Die Ausstellung bleibt bis 30. Oktober vor der Bibliothek. Wir möchtet euch noch mal einladen, diese tolle interessante Ausstellung euch anzusehen.

Dear members,

Our Society is proud to have the Goethe-Institut (Singapore) here in NUS to present you an exhibition - "Advertising in Germany - A Journey from the German Empire to the Present".

Since the invention of the advertising pillar (as shown above)- named after its inventor, Mr Erich Litfaß, in 1855 - advertising has played a major role in everyday Germany culture. This exhibition "Advertising in Germany" is co-presented by the Goethe-Institut, the German Museum of Advertising, Frankfurt, and the German magazine stern. It documents on 33 panels, the history of advertising, beginning from the German Empire to the media revolution of today.

The exhibition will illustrated 150 years of German economic and cultural history by means of characteristic advertising styles. Changes as well as the continuation of the advertising industry and its images, brands and styles are also shown clearly.

Wir freuen uns, dass das Goethe-Institut Singapur hier an der NUS eine Ausstellung veranstaltet- "Werbung in Deutschland -Eine Zeitreise vom Kaiserreich zum Medienzeitalter".

Seit der Erfindung der Litfaßsäule 1855, die ihren Namen ihrem Erfinder Erich Litfaß verdankt, ist Reklame Teil der deutschen Alltagskultur. Die Ausstellung "Werbung in Deutschland", die in Zusammenarbeit mit der Illustrierten stern und dem Deutschen Werbemuseum Frankfurt entstanden ist, dokumentiert auf 33 Tafeln die Geschichte der Werbung von der Gründerzeit bis hinein in die Medienrevolution unserer Zeit.

150 Jahre Zeit-, Wirtschafts und Kulturgeschichte werden dargestellt an ausgewählten Beispielen stilprägender Anzeigen. Wandel, aber auch Kontinuität der Werbewirtschaft und ihrer Bilder, der Marken und ihrer Stilwelten werden hier deutlich.

Movie Screening: Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of the others)
Our society will be showing a German movie "Das Leben der Anderen" (The Lives of the Others) this Thursday, 11 th Oct, at 6pm in Central Library Theatrette 1. We would like to invite all members to join us! (:

Plot synopsis:
Captain Wiesler(Ulrich Muhe) is a wiretapping expert with the Stasi (East German Secret Police) in the mid-eighties,who becomes disillusioned with his career and life in general in the former socialist republic when his latest assignment, Georg Dreyman(Sebastian Koch),a playwright with views against the totalitarian state,starts to challenge his beliefs through his overheard conversations.

Filmvorführung: Das Leben der Anderen
Unser Verein wird am Donnerstag, dem 11. Oktober um 18 Uhr im Theatrette 1 der Central Library den Film "Das Leben der Anderen" vorführen. Wir möchten alle Mitglieder zu der Vorführung einladen! (:

Synopsis:
Fünf Jahre vor seinem Ende sichert der DDR-Staat seinen Machtanspruch mit einem erbarmungslosen System aus Kontrolle und Überwachung. Als Oberstleutnant Anton Grubitz (Ulrich Tukur) den linientreuen Stasi-Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe) auf den erfolgreichen Dramatiker Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) und seine Lebensgefährtin, den Theaterstar Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck), ansetzt, verspricht er sich davon einen Karriereschub. Das Eintauchen in Das Leben der Anderen – in Liebe, Literatur, freies Denken und Reden – macht Wiesler die Armseligkeit seines eigenen Daseins bewusst und eröffnet ihm eine nie gekannte Welt, der er sich immer weniger entziehen kann.
