AGM cum Welcome Tea

Food, friends, fun...what more could one ask for? On 20 September 2006, German language students packed Yusof Ishak House's Function Rooms 1 & 2 for Die Deutsche Sphäre's Annual General Meeting.

Gracing the event was Frau Niemann, who delivered the welcome address.

Siwei, club president, then took the stage to introduce past and upcoming activities.

No gathering in Singapore is complete without food, and a mouthwatering feast awaited.

Also selling like hotcakes was membership. Members enjoy advance notice and rebates for the club's events. Membership is open throughout the year, so spread the word!

The AGM is also a platform to recruit interested members to form the incoming Executive Committee. Interviews will be held after the recess for shortlisted applicants.

This year marks a milestone for our club as we become a full-fledged society. A warm welcome to all and we count on your support to make Die Deutsche Sphäre a success!

Jahreshauptversammlung und Anfangsparty

Essen, Freunde, Spaß...was noch kann man wünschen? Am 20. September 2006 beteiligten sich Deutschlernende an der Jahreshauptversammlung der Deutschen Sphäre in den Veranstaltungsräumen 1 & 2 des Yusof Ishak Hauses.

Frau Niemann beehrte uns mit ihrer Anfangsrede.

Anschließend stellte der Clubpräsident Siwei die vergangenen und kommenden Aktivitäten des Klubs vor.

Ohne Essen ist kein Sammeln in Singapur komplett , und ein leckeres Fest wurde vorbereitet.

Mitgliedschaft im Club fand auch groß Zuspruch. Mitglieder werden über geplante Aktivitäten früh informiert und kriegen auch Rabatte für die Aktivitäten. Während des Jahres kann man jederzeit Mitgliedschaft beantragen, also bringt eure Freunde mit!

Außerdem ist die JHV eine Plattform, auf der Mitglieder anwenden können, sich am Vorstand des Clubs zu beteiligen. Interviews werden nach der Recesswoche geführt für alle in der engeren Auswahlliste.

Dieses Jahr ist ein Meilenstein für den Club, denn wir werden bald ein echter Verein. Herzlich Willkommen bei der Deutschen Sphäre und wir bitten um Unterstützung, damit die Deutsche Sphäre ein Erfolg wird!

HERZLICH WILLKOMMEN!

A heartfelt welcome to a new academic year! Die deutsche Sphäre would like to thank you for signing up with us and also invite you to our Annual General Meeting cum Welcome Tea and membership registration!

The proceedings of the event would be as follows:
• Introduction of the Club
• Report on past year activities
• Proposed activities for upcoming academic year and beyond
• Q & A
• Break for light refreshments and membership registration (an annual subscription of $5 would be collected)

In addition, we are looking for members to form an executive committee for the new academic year and spearhead the upcoming events. Subcommittees would also be formed to organise various activities to be held in the coming semesters. Interested parties for the committees can send your details or enquires to frag.mal.uns@gmail.com so that we can get in touch with you to give you more information and know you better.

Also, to help us cater to the event, we would appreciate if you could RSVP (before 19. September) to the above mentioned email address. If you are unable to make it for the event, but would like to know more about us and membership, please let us know as well, so that we can keep you in the loop.

HERZLICH WILLKOMMEN!

Habt ihr am 20. September abends schon etwas vor? Im Namen der deutschen Sphäre möchte ich euch herzlich zu unserem ersten Jahrestreffen einladen.Was ist die deutsche Sphäre? Dieser Club wurde vor zwei Jahren als eine Interessensgruppe von Studenten gegründet, die Deutsch an der Universität lernen und sich für die Sprache und Kultur Deutschlands interessieren. Er bietet diesen Studenten die Möglichkeit, Deutsch außerhalb des Klassenzimmers zu üben und funktioniert auch als eine art Plattform auf der sich Deutschlernende und Austauschstudenten kennen lernen und Kontakte knüpfen können.

In den zwei Jahren entwickelte sich der Club weiter und wir machen jetzt auch Aktivitäten, die nicht zwangsläufig nur mit Sprache zu tun haben. Es gibt Workshops, Filmabende, Austellungen u.s.w..Dieses Jahr wird die Universität den Club als einen echten Verein anerkennen.

Der Ablauf des Jahrestreffens 2006 im Überblick:
• Kurze Vorstellung des Clubs
• Bericht über die Aktivitäten im letzten Jahr
• Vorschläge für Aktivitäten in kommenden Jahren (z.B. Tandem-Program, Deutsches Filmfest u.s.w.)
• Empfang : kleine deutschen Erfrishungen
Organisatorisches:
• Der Jahresbeitrag für die Mitgliedschaft im Club beträgt $5. Interessierte können ihm auf der Jahrestagung beitreten.

Matriculation Fair 31. Juli - 3. August

A first for the club, we are extremely thankful to the Goethe Institut, German Embassy and DAAD for their kind sponsorship and support, as well as the wonderful support from members who helped out in setting up, manning the booth and clearing up. Last but not least, the 215 freshmen and women who signed up with us!

Following last year's Rhythm and Poetry Hiphop workshop, we were honoured that Kronstädta, his wife Johanna along with their new born baby Lila in tow were here with us this year.

Although it was only a one day event, students had lots of fun nonetheless, creating their own rap lyrics and later rapping to the beat provided by the crew.

Some rapping and grooving by Kronstädta and Johanna to break the ice...

Some of the paticipants needed some encouragment...

While others were more spontaneous and looked to be a huge hit in Germany in the future...

But in the end, everyone took to the stage...

even the teachers got down to the act... (Frau Niemann and Frau Neumann rapping about the problems of having similar last names...)

We'll be back...

STAMMTISCH 2006

Stammtisch saw the students, german learners and native speakers alike gathering once again at Munchie Monkeys.
After a couple of beers (or non alcoholic drinks), tongues were loosened, the ice was broken and conversations and new friends were made.

Planet Football Weltsprache Fußball

With the World Cup Fever catching on faster than you can say "Deutschland für Weltmeister~!" how could die deutsche Sphäre not be part of the action?

With great support from Goethe Institut Singapur, as well the NUS Photographic Society and Centre for Language Studies, we were able to bring the exhibition "Weltsprache Fußball" to the campus.

50 photographs by leading photographers from MAGNUM PHOTOS agency, including masters like Henri Cartier-Bresson and René Burri, Abbas and Martin Parr.In pursuing the FIFA motto of “A time to make friends”, this touring exhibition is the Goethe-Institut’s official contribution to the FIFA World Cup™ art and culture programme, showing football - a passion shared across the world - is an “anthropological constant” (global language)
which unites people, and a sport which has no national or cultural boundaries.The exhibition covers themes directly associated with football, such as urbanity, society at play, social structures and the role of the sexes.

Here were some of the photographs on display, an assortment of both colour and black and white.

In addition to the photo exhibition were other activities like "Torwand schießen", Tippkick, Football Quiz, vote for your favourite poster, and screenings of the best goals from the World cup. Cool prizes like memorabillia from the Deutsche Bundesliga were generously sponsored by Goethe Institut.
