Goethe Institut is holding this exhibition called Germany Bite-Sized from 18th January - 7th February 2012 at the National Library of Singapore. I will be visiting the place myself soon ^^ Do check it out before the event ends! I believe it will be a great learning and cultural experience!

Hallo everyone!

How is your 2012 so far? Hope you have enjoyed your first few weeks of Semester 2 and not starting to feel the stress and all yet! :)

We should have some time off the busy school schedule to relax and enjoy a little before the mid-terms stress comes in fully! Our German Society has some fun events lined up for this semester, and to start it off, we are going to hold a Grillparty next week on 8th February 2012 (Wednesday)!

It will be a BBQ party German/Singapore style!~ You can get to know more German students and other German enthusiasts! At the same time, you may also try to form tandem partners with one another. Tandem is a German word that we use to mean two people from different cultures teaching each other their languages and culture. It's really a very good way of learning and making new friends. Lets' try to invite all our friends and exchange students to this event! I can't anticipate any further!! :D

Hallo liebe Mitglieder!

Hope you're doing well in school! Semester 1 is ending soon and what better way to celebrate the end of exams and the start of the December holidays than with an authentic German Christmas party!

This year is the first year that we'll be holding this Christmas Party with the generous support of the German teachers, all with the purpose of giving you guys a taste of what a traditional Christmas celebration would be in Germany. The party will tentatively be set in the first week of December and I'll be emailing you the exact details once they're finalised. There'll be Christmas decorations, Christmas poems and maybe even Christmas cookies and waffles! Of course, our own German choir will also be performing Christmas songs for everyone!

If you've missed out on previous German choir practices, not to worry! We'll be practicing new songs in line with the Christmas theme and everyone is welcome to participate! There is no requirement for music or German background.

There are currently 5 songs that we are considering and the choir will be performing 4 of them for the party. Do click on the following links and let us know which ones you'd prefer before coming for practice on Monday:

Are your taste buds longing for some delicious German food? Then "Stammtisch" is just for you! "Stammtisch" is a German food buffet organised by the committee to promote bonding and German culture. What's more, it comes at a very cheap price! $2 for members, $4 for non-members. So do come down and join us at the Deck for some good food and company.

Heya, the Choir is up and set to begin!

The event we'll be preparing for this time is the CLS Picnic. The first few practices, which begin during the vacation, are mentioned above. More dates to be found at the panel right of this post on the blog page.

German songs to be sung are:

Auf einem Baum ein Kuckuck
die Affen rasen durch den Wald
Bunt sind schon die Wälder
Erntekanon

Songs above will be "choir-ised", so it would be that karaoke-ish. And don't worry if you don't know how to read notes, it's easy for one to follow the tune of the band.

This event has been around for quite some time and I've to say it's fun and relaxation guaranteed. It is open to all, so do come over and lend your voice!

ATTENTION: Due to last minute changes, the practice on Friday will be at 1100-1300, AS 3/0302

PS: If you're learning German, this is one of the only few things you can do to go along with your routine classes, learning a language does not have to be that dry.

German Learning Session

The motive of this event is to prepare newcomers to the German language for their upcoming tests and quizzes, at the same time promoting interest in the language and member bonding. Hi all, there will be a read (autorenlesung) on 12th May (today), by Zafer Senocak. Though having brought up in Germany, the author is born Turkish. His texts are mostly about issues like immigration, integration, assimilation and so on. He is known for taking different perspectives on issues at hand. It will be held conveniently in school, at the Faculty Lounge at the Deck, as shown above.

Outgoing Message from President : 2010/2011

Dear members and friends of the German Society,

I would like to warmly thank all of you and my executive committee of the academic year 2010/2011 for your continued support. This year has been an outstanding year, with a record number of very successful events, the most recent being the very enjoyable Stammtisch held in collaboration with the French Club.

The recent elections held have produced the committee for 2011/2012. Some will be familiar faces, some will be new. Nevertheless, I am sure that their passion and commitment, as well as their desire to serve will bring the German society to even greater heights in the coming academic year. I leave the society in their capable hands.

We also had a prize presentation during our general elections as well as an AGM. In short, we thanked all our teacher advisors, Frau Chen, Prof Chan, Frau Niemann, Frau Neumann as well as Herr Doeppel for their unwavering support, both financially and logistically. We also introduced a new award this academic year, the "most outstanding ex-co member award" which was awarded to our general secretary, Ng Joo San. Her contribution to the German society has been immense.

We hope that you will continue to stay with the society in the coming academic year. Though I will be graduating and leaving NUS to begin my next phase of life, the German society has been an integral part of my varsity life and I leave with many fond memories. I hope that this will be so for you as well.

I hope that all of you will continue to find joy in learning German and I wish you all the best in the exams. Viel Spass und viel Erfolg weiterhin!

Important Notice: AGM cum Elections on 4 April 2011

Please be reminded that our society's annual general meeting will be held on 4 April 2011, Monday from 19:30 to 21:30 at AS6/0212 and the presence of all members is requested.

The details of the present candidates for the upcoming elections is available at the page "Candidates for the 1st Elections AY11/12". Do refer to the page to be better informed of each candidate's profile. For members who are still interested in running for elections, the deadline for applications has been extended to 2 April 2011, 1700 sharp. The deadline is final.

Do take note of the Elections procedure:

All candidates are required to be present throughout the elections, have to make a compulsory speech (maximum time: 5 minutes) and answer questions posted after his/her speech from the current committee and other members.
After every candidate has given a speech, all present will vote.
Voting is confidential and colluding between members and candidates is disallowed.
Only one name can be written for each position and repetition of names is disallowed.
Any incorrect voting slips will be forfeited.
Counting of votes will be done in front of all present.
Votes will be immediately tabulated on the board.
If there is no clear winner with a majority of votes, the particular position will be re-contested.
After all clear winners have been chosen, the elections will conclude with the announcement of results by outgoing committee and the pledge of commitment by the incoming committee members.

Also, our current President will be endorsing CCA Cards for contributions by members this academic year (AY1011) after the AGM so do bring along your CCA Card. Do note that requests to endorse CCA cards for this academic year will not be entertained after the present committee steps down. And such, we seek your cooperation.

CLS Day: Quiz About Germany Results

On CLS Day held on 2nd March, our committee organized "Quiz About Germany" at our society's booth. I am pleased to announce that there were over 40 participants and 15 participants achieved a score of 70% or more! Invitation to CLS Day

The Centre for Language Studies (CLS) at NUS is celebrating its 10th anniversary tomorrow, 2 March 2011. It's happening at the area outside the Central Library!

There'll be many booths along the walkway, where you can find out more about the language programmes offered by the Centre, as well as play games from different countries.

Die deutsche Sphäre will be manning the German booth for CLS Day. There'll be many games such as Kniffel, a German memory game and a quiz about Germany. Gummi bears will be distributed to everyone who participates in a game and additional prizes if you do well!

Feel free to talk to us if you have any questions regarding the Immersion Programmes and Exchange Programmes to Germany/German-speaking countries. We also have a couple of photo albums where you can view photos of students who have gone to Germany for their Immersion or Exchange programmes, and another album with photos of our society's events.

Our German choir will also be performing for CLS Day tomorrow. There'll be a performance at around 11:45AM to 12PM, so look out for it! :)

TAGFISH by Berlin (Belgium)

The National Museum of Singapore will be presenting a production from Belgium, TAGFISH, on 14-16 April 2011 at the Gallery Theatre.

It is a theatrically-staged film montage by a Flemish group called BERLIN, and is presented in German and English with English subtitles.

Tagfish* tells the story of the UNESCO world heritage site Zollverein, a coal mining complex in the German Ruhr area. Following the exodus of industry from the region, people set to work searching for new purposes for the abandoned land and vacant industrial heritage sites. A Sheikh has plans for his latest dream: to develop a luxury hotel in Zollverein. Can a world heritage site be sold?

Six individuals: the architect, the town planner, the professor, the negotiator, the journalist and the provocateur, each have their own opinions about this. These people have never met before in real life but are put together on six individual screens, waiting for the Sheikh to take the seventh chair. In a theatrically-staged film montage, these interviewees debate, argue and philosophise about feasibility and costs in millions, about utopias and visions, stagnation and impending change. The material used in Tagfish is documentary, presented as a performance.

Dear Members & Friends,

We are pleased to inform you that we have confirmed the design and the price for our T-shirt. The T-shirt will be available in three colors - black, yellow and red. And it will only cost $12 each!

For members and choir members (refer to updated list on right panel), we will be offering a $2 discount for the first shirt, i.e. you would only need to pay $10. A deposit of $5 will be collected and more details will be available soon. We would really need more orders so as to enjoy the special price offered to us so please get your classmates and friends to order too. Do you feel jealous each time you see your friend wearing a t-shirt of his/her club or society? Do you feel upset because you don't know who else on campus are in the same society as you? Do you want a t-shirt that screams your membership in the German Language Society?

Fret not!

I am pleased to inform you that our society will be having our very own t-shirt this semester! This t-shirt is specially designed for our society by our very own editor and would be available in three colors (black, red and yellow). The design is not finalized at the moment as there may be slight changes since we are still negotiating for better prices. Nevertheless, the overall design will be very similar to the one attached.

We are accepting your orders now. Fill in this online form to order. Once the design is confirmed, we will send everyone an email and subsequently collect a small deposit. You may be assured that each t-shirt will not cost more than $20 and it could be much lower if we receive more orders. So hesitate no further, send in your forms and get your friends to do so too!

Do view the attached photos for reference. Alternatively, if there are significant savings from not printing on the sleeves, we may use the last design instead.

The sizes will roughly be the same as the usual class or camp tees, e.g. 36 inches for XS, 38" for S and etc.

German Movie Screening: Die Fremde

Die deutsche Sphäre will be screening the German film Die Fremde (When We Leave) [2009], a drama directed by Feo Aladag, next week. This film was also selected to be shown at the 14^th German Film Festival Singapore 2010. (Sypnosis is found below the poster.)

"Stop dreaming!" says the mother to her twenty-five-year-old daughter Umay when she and her young son Cem appear at the door of her parents' Berlin apartment. Umay has run away from an unhappy marriage in Istanbul and has returned to Berlin because she wants to lead her own life again. She knows that she's expecting a lot from her parents and siblings but she hopes that their loving relationship will mean more to them than the pressure of social conventions.

But before long she realises that her family cannot simply ignore their deep-seated traditions and the situation could well break them. When the family decides to restore the family's reputation by returning Cem to his father, Umay once again begs for their help - but ends up breaking with them for good. Umay falls in love with Stipe and she and Cem begin a new life. Umay tries to mend the relationship with her family, but doesn't realise that it's too late for reconciliation.

Feo Aladag: "Many German citizens of Turkish descent are - understandably - at odds with their identity. In Germany they feel Turkish and unwanted, and in Turkey they feel like Germans. Even in this section of society adultery is an exception - the worst catastrophe. In my opinion, one of the reasons for the current return to traditional values, particularly within a younger generation, is social exclusion by the majority society. Die Fremde is not meant to be a representative portrait of a social group, nor is it a manual for life. Rather, the film seeks to bring to light one possibility, which, in this story, contains the real sense of hope."

Love finds a tabloid journalist in an unexpected place in this romantic comedy from Germany. Ludo (Til Schweiger) is a reporter who has enjoyed a successful career documenting the peccadilloes of the rich and famous with the help of his photographer sidekick Moritz (Matthias Schweighoefer). But a run-in with boxer Wladimir Klitschko and his fiancée Yvonne Catterfeld at a party turns into a food fight and Ludo is charged with disturbing the peace. Ludo is ordered to perform three hundred hours of community service at a children's day care center, which is especially bad news since Ludo doesn't care for kids.

Ludo finds himself working side by side with the center's director, Anna Gotzlowski (Nora Tschirner), who had an unfortunate run in with Ludo when they were children and doesn't like him any more now than she did then. Anna goes out of her way to make things difficult for Ludo, but in time he begins to get the hang of his new assignment, starts bonding with his young charges, and even enjoys a brief fling with a sexy single mom (Brigitte Zeh). But as Ludo's soft side begins to surface, Anna finds herself increasingly attracted to him, and the antagonists discover they're falling in love.

The first German Learning Session of this academic year was held last Thursday, the 30th of September 2010. We received a larger number of participants than expected but that is always a good thing!

The German 1 students practised reading aloud and speaking in German, with help and advice from the seniors, and the German 3 students (along with the sole native German present) made conversation with each other in German.

The NUS Students' German Language Society has been involved in two events so far, since the start of the new academic year (2010-2011) this August.

The first, German Day, held on 8 September 2010, was a collaboration with the German Embassy in Singapore, the Goethe-Institut, the DAAD, the German European School, as well as the NUS International Office and Centre for Language Studies. The NUS Students' German Language Society was involved in the NUS Students' German Choir and several of the German games booths and quizzes.

Last Thursday (16 September 2010) was the also the very first Stammtisch of the academic year, organized by our new Project Directors, Royston and Zhang Lu. Hours of preparation resulted in every trace of food being gone within the first half hour!

I would just like to say a big Thank You to all of you who helped out for German Day! I had a lot of fun, and I am sure you did too, (especially those people who won 50 000 Euros in cash=) Thank you for all your hard work, be it coming faithfully for practices, coming down at 9 am to set up the benches, mounting the photos and captions, or simply being so enthusiastic and participating in all the games and quizzes. This is only the start of the semester, and it has been brilliant so far. The German Society looks forward to all of your support for our next few events too!

To thank you for all of your hard work, the German Society is warmly inviting all of you to Stammtisch on Thursday. We need people to help with the pasting of photos for the "Mein Deutschland" photo competition! If you are free any time from 9 AM to 2 PM this Monday (6 September), please head down to the CLS Meeting Room at AS4 Level 5 and lend us your help! You'll be able to take a sneak peak at the beautiful photos that were submitted for the competition. You don't have to stay for the entire duration of 5 hours, so just come down whenever you are free!

We also need a few friends who are free on Wednesday morning (8 September) to help put up the photos for the photo exhibition before the event. If you are interested in helping out, please come down to the Central Forum at 9 AM on Wednesday. Thanks!

3rd International A Cappella Festival

The A Cappella Society is holding their 3rd International A Cappella Festival this October. This year's festival features 3 German a cappella ensembles, Niniwe, Vocaldente and Klangbezirk!

Prof. Dr. Peter Gomez is Chairman of the Board of SIX Swiss Infrastructure and Exchange Group and the Dean of the Executive School of Management, Technology and Law at the University of St. Gallen. He was President of the University of St.Gallen from 1999-2005. He has published 14 books and over 150 other contributions in the field of strategic management, corporate organizational design, systems thinking in management and societal impact of management. He was senior vice-president corporate planning and organization of Ringier Group, Zurich and was the founding partner of Valcor AG, Zurich, consultants for strategy and M&A.

Synopsis
Prof. Gomez will reflect on why both Singapore and Switzerland are well positioned to cope with the consequences of the financial markets turmoil by analyzing competitive advantages of both countries. He will also address Switzerland’s new financial market strategy against the background of the international financial crisis, a wave of bank customer data hefts, and the pressure from OECD and foreign governments regarding banking secrecy. Finally, Prof Gomez will compare Singapore’s and Switzerland’s stock exchanges and what it takes to prosper in the financial markets.

Interested in improving your German?

Join our Tandem Program! We will match you with a German native speaker or a German speaker of a higher standard if it is possible, and in exchange you will practice with them a language you are fluent in and are offering. All you have to do is provide us with your details.

The following details are needed: Name, Contact, Languages offered (eg. Interested in learning German, offering Chinese), and language proficiency (e.g. German 1/2, A Level Chinese etc). If you are offering German, do state how many tandem partners you would like to have.

Dear students and members, past, present and future,

The new semester holds exciting things in store for the Germany society! As president, I would warmly like to welcome all of you to the German society in AY 2010/2011. The German society holds many activities during the semester, and we are going to kick off the semester with our Welcome Tea, where we will update members on the present activities we have, as well as introduce the core committee and announce our elections for the posts of project directors, editor and liaison officer.

We will be coming down to the German classes during the first week of semester to personally say hi to all of you. The German society has always been a place where students who are interested in aspects of German language and culture get to meet German exchange students, hone their German language ability, as well as interact with the German speaking community in NUS. I am a European Studies and Political Science major, with German as my third language. I speak and write fluent German and am very interested in German culture. I love getting to know new people and am a very task oriented person. I have passed the DSH exam, an exam allowing one to study in Germany with the highest possible grade, a grade 3. This exam was administered by the University of Heidelberg, where I was an exchange student in the summer of 2009.

My experiences and what I can contribute to the society:
I have been in the German Society for 2 years. In my first year, I was a member of the sub committee where I understudied a project director. In the academic year 2009/2010, I was the project director of the society where I organised many successful events, such as the Stammtisch, the SEP sharing session and the Tandem Programme. Given my experience and my familiarity with the members, I believe that I am well equipped to lead the society to greater heights in the academic year 2010/2011. I look forward to getting a closer partnership with the Goethe institute, as well as getting new students who are studying German to join our society so that they will be able to enjoy Germany away from Germany as well. I love German Language when I first met it in my studies of Music. When I was playing a song named “Aufschwung” by Robert Schumann, I have asked myself,” What is the meaning of Aufschwung?” After I have taken German 1,” auf” means up,” schwung” means swing. “Ach so, es bedeutet “Upswing” in Englisch.” Hence, it has ignited my joy of learning German. Besides having lectures and tutorials, I have joined this special learning platform- German Language Society since last year and I work as a subcommittee member under Project Management Group. I was having a great fun here by organizing program such as Stammtisch, SEP sharing session, German learning session, Tandem Program, Filming, and etc. We cook; we have supper; we play and we learn together. To me, German Language Society provides me a sense of belongings. Thus, I have confidence to propose a higher position which is Treasurer.

My experiences and what I can contribute to the society:
With my 1 year experience in German Language Society, I have generally known the structures of organization for the upcoming events of the year. As what I know, we will be having German Day next year, taking over the role of NTU. It will be a very excited experience for me to learn more about the organizing skills from previous EXCO. Responsibility is the most important value especially as a Treasurer who handling with money and stuffs. Treasurer has to deal with our society’s financial report, filling taxes, reimbursement and funding. Bio:
Hi everyone! I'm currently majoring in Chemistry at the Faculty of Science and minoring in European Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. I have a great passion for the Arts (Performing and Literary), and it is this love for classical music (especially deutsche Lieder) and poetry which gave me the courage to take up German at NUS 3 years ago. When I'm not working in the laboratory, I like to sing and accompany myself on the piano, discover German/English poems (especially those set to music by classical composers), blog about music, attend concerts, and immerse myself in the beauty of nature.

My experiences and what I can contribute to the society:
I was a member of the society since 2007. Though I did not know any German when I first joined, I was really happy to be able to meet many like-minded friends here who share the same love for music and German culture as me. In 2009 I decided to take up the Treasurer role under the leadership of Shawn, and together with him and the guidance of my other exco members we managed to attract the highest number of students in the record of our society’s history at the Matriculation Fair, with close to 100 of them turning up at our Welcome Tea. As the Treasurer, my main responsibilities include sourcing for venues/equipments, filing taxes, keeping a record of the society’s expenditure and doing reimbursements, but I have also actively helped out in the planning, execution and publicising of events such as the Matriculation Fair, Tandem Programme, Stammtisch, SEP Sharing Session, German Learning Session and other activities organised by my Project Directors. Next year will be my final year at the University and my final year as an undergraduate member of the society, so I hope you can continue to give me your generous support and a chance to make next year a fulfilling and memorable year for you and for me. Upcoming Elections, 1st April 2010

Hi everyone!

The German Society will be holding 2 elections for the next committee.

The first one will be for the core EXCO, comprising of the PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT, GENERAL SECRETARY and TREASURER. These are the key admin appointments. It will be held on Thursday, 1st April 2010 from 7-10pm at YIH Function Room 2, the Thursday just before Good Friday holiday.

The second election will be held by the newly elected EXCO to select their EXCO directors (some of whom might even be new students, or returning students from SEP). These are: EDITOR, PROJECT DIRECTOR 1, PROJECT DIRECTOR 2 and MARKETING PROJECT DIRECTOR. It will be held either on the 2nd or 3rd week of school when it reopens in August, depending on the newly elected core EXCO.

Voters eligible are all members past and present, plus those who have studied or are currently studying German.

The process will be as follows: all applicants send in their resumes to us and these will be screened and put up for common information.

They will be writing:
1. their name,
2. matric number,
3. year,
4. German level,
5. position interested that they are running for,
6. 1st and 2nd choices,
7. personal bio,
8. and what they can contribute to the society.

The deadline will be 31st March 2010.

Those who send in their resumes and get registered are considered for voting and their forms will displayed on the blog.

For the day itself,
1. all candidates who have successfully registered will give a 5-10 min speech.
The floor is permitted to ask questions.
The process will be controlled by the outgoing committee not standing for election.

2. all present will fill in the vote.
Voting is secret and all present cannot collude.
All will write down only one name per choice.
No repetition is allowed.

The vote consists of the following list, with a blank next to the name.

You will also benefit from our scenario-based practices where you can learn how to use the German language to communicate in the various situations, which will aid you in your examination preparations.

Mr Martin Doepel

Martin Doepel was born in Jena, Germany, which was formerly part of the DDR. He graduated from the Friedrich-Schiller University of Jena in 2004 and majored in German as a Foreign Language, Modern History and Political Science. Before coming to Singapore, he taught at his alma mater, the University of Jena and and was involved in the development of E Learning material there. He has been in Singapore since 2007 and currently teaches German at the Center for Language Studies. His interests include cognitive aspects of language acquisition, new media in language teaching and the Cold War.

A few weeks ago, the German Language Society held a SEP Sharing session for all interested to find out more information on SEPs in Germany, whose universities are amongst the best in many fields of study. About the Film

Auf der Anderen Seite is a film directed by a Turkish-German director Faith Atkins. With this film, Faith Atkins won the Best Director at Golden Orange Film Festival. It also won the prize for Best Screenplay at the 60^th Cannes Film Festival in 2007 and LUX prize for European cinema by European Parliament.

Synopsis (English)

Nejat seems disapproving about his widower father Ali's choice of prostitute Yeter for a live-in girlfriend. But he grows fond of her when he discovers she sends money home to Turkey for her daughter's university studies. Yeter's sudden death distances father and son. Nejat travels to Istanbul to search for Yeter's daughter Ayten. Political activist Ayten has fled the Turkish police and is already in Germany. She is befriended by a young woman, Lotte, who invites rebellious Ayten to stay in her home, a gesture not particularly pleasing to her conservative mother Susanne. When Ayten is arrested and her asylum plea is denied, she is deported and imprisoned in Turkey. Lotte travels to Turkey, where she gets caught up in the seemingly hopeless situation of freeing Ayten.

Als der Witwer Ali die Prostituierte Yeter überredet, bei ihm einzuziehen, ist sein Sohn Nejat irritiert. Nejat taut erst auf, als er erfährt, dass sie ihrer Tochter Ayten regelmäßig Geld für ihr Studium schickt. Nach Yeters plötzlichem Tod reist Nejat in die Türkei, um Ayten zu suchen. Die politische Aktivistin Ayten ist jedoch vor der türkischen Polizei nach Deutschland geflüchtet und bei einer jungen Frau, Lotte, untergetaucht. Hello everyone!

Thanks to all who dropped by our booth yesterday for In-Fusion 2010! We hope that you enjoyed the pretzels, Kinder chocolate and Maoam we had for you; the little German language game "Doppelkopf"; and most importantly, talking to us about Germany!

We all had a great time sharing our knowledge and experiences with those who were interested to know about Germany and getting to know each of you! A special thanks to all EXCO and subcomm members for their hard work and for helping out in decorating the booth and preparing for the event!

Hallo zusammen!

With a 'revamped' corner of the Arts Canteen, really (REALLY) good German food (and surprisingly AUTHENTIC - as commended by our German guests!) and a bunch of awesome people (including our friends from ISEC), we kick-started year 2010 with our very first Stammtisch!

We hope that all who attended enjoyed the food, the people, the food, the decorations and not to forget the FOOD, and had as much fun as we did!!

Thumbs up to the organizing committee for taking the Stammtisch one level higher! A job well done, people!! =)

Die deutsche Sphäre invites you to... Stammtisch!

Liebe Mitglieder,

Are you feeling stressed in school? Do you wish to have more opportunities to learn about German language and culture? Do you wish to meet people to practice German with? If you do, come join us!

The German Society will be kick-starting our first event of the semester with Stammtisch! Join us on Thursday at The Deck to be greeted by an Arts Canteen that does not look like any other school day. Get to taste simple German fare (such as German sausages, potato salad, etc.), meet with lots of friendly people, practise German and share experiences with one another!

We will be selling tickets for the Stammtisch on Monday and Tuesday, 12 – 6pm, at the table outside the Central Library. You can also email us for the tickets and pick them up on Monday or Tuesday. Prices are charged at $2 for members and $4 for non-members. Be sure to get your tickets soon!

Tandem Programme 2010

Welcome back! Thank you for your participation in the Tandem Programme we had last semester. Some of you did not manage to find a Tandem Partner, and we do apologise for not being able to find one for you. However, the Tandem Programme is still on in Semester 2, and please be assured that the structure has slightly changed. If you are interested in practicing German, please indicate your interest to us by sending us an email. The email should contain your name, your German proficiency and your native language. We will enlarge the groups to make sure that it is possible for most of you to find a Tandem Partner. Hello everyone!

Hope you all have had a great start to the new year!

The German Language Society is currently recruiting members to be part of the Project Committees. We are looking for 8 new committee members to assist the current Project Directors. As a member of the Project Committee, you will be working under our Project Directors, namely Ya Jie and Rachel. Under them, you will get a chance to plan for future German Society Events like Stammtisch, German Movie Screening, German Learning Session and SEP Sharing Session. This is your chance to showcase your talent in planning of events for this Society! Furthermore, you will be rewarded handsomely with CCA points for doing so!

Please send in your full applications to us. In your application, you should include your full particulars, past experiences in organising events, and also why you think you are the person we are looking for.

This is your chance to profess your love for the German culture and also to showcase your planning skills. Please send in all applications by 18 January 2010, Monday, 2359 hrs.

Dear Members,

How have you all been? I hope all has been well with you.

It has been an exciting semester so far, and there have been extensive changes and exciting innovations made. True, some events have been popular and others less so, but the main thing is that our German Language Society is expanding and improving. We have had many exciting events and developments which I would love to update all of you about.

Events and activities that we have organised so far (as I've said, some extremely successfully) :

I would like to thank Sheena and Wei'an especially for helping me in this major event, and special thanks must go to ISEC and their EXCO members.

As President, I assure you of the continued efforts and events to come. Thank you for your support, and let's have an excellent semester 2 later. Special thanks also to Valerie from the IRO as well as all the teachers who have assisted our initiatives, especially Herr Doepel during the SEP Sharing Session.

Here's another quick update on the movie screening we had last Tuesday.

Sadly, not many members could make it for this event.

Cultural Event: Berlin Dayz

Hi all!!

There will be a very exciting event coming to town very soon! The Berlin Dayz celebrations will be held in Singapore from 30. October to 9. November 2009 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In 1989, the Berlin Wall came down. To celebrate the 20th anniversary as well as to showcase the re-united, re-born and re-assured capital of Germany, the Goethe-Institut Singapore and the German Embassy Singapore jointly organise the "Berlin Dayz", a series of cultural activities in collaboration with Singaporean and German partners.

Activities include various film screenings, photo exhibitions, Berlin swings in the Singapore Botanic Gardens and much more!

The German Society is organizing yet another event just for you! For those who contributed to the success of Stammtisch and SEP Sharing Session, a BIG THANK YOU!

This time round, we will be having a German Movie Screening Session!

Movie Title: “Das Leben der Anderen”.

Here is the summary:
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's movie debut focuses on the horrifying, sometimes unintentionally funny system of observation in the former East Germany. In the early 1980s, the successful dramatist Georg Dreyman and his longtime companion Christa-Maria Sieland, a popular actress, are big intellectual stars in the socialist state, although they secretly don't always think loyal to the party line. One day, the Minister of Culture becomes interested in Christa, so the secret service agent Wiesler is instructed to observe and sound out the couple, but their life fascinates him more and more.

Stammtisch: Oktoberfest 19th Oct '09

Hallo zusammen!

Yesterday we had our very first Stammtisch of the year in conjunction with the Oktoberfest!

Taking place at Munchie Monkeys, we were provided with various delicious German Foods such as Schintzel and Bratwurst, served with French fries and accompanied by beer!

We also had a surprise Birthday celebration, although a day late, for our Vice-President Wei Ting!!

With such good food and very fun people, it goes without saying that we all enjoyed ourselves very much! In fact, to our surprise, everyone was soooooo busy socializing, that we hardly had time to play any of the many card and board games prepared for the event! (before MM chased us out at 10pm)

We hope those of you who came down had an enjoyable evening and thanks for making this event a success! As for those who could not make it this time, do come and join us for future events! =)

Hallo Mitglieder!

The German Society is organizing 2 back-to-back activities just for you! For those who attended our German Learning Session, we hope that you had an enriching time.

This time round, we will conduct 2 events, held on 2 consecutive days in Week 10 of this Academic Year. The details are as follows:-

1) Stammtisch. What is it? For those who are learning German 1, you might be able to recognise "Tisch", but are still clueless on what is it. For those taking higher level German, you might know what it is, but have you experienced it in Germany yet?

Fret not! Because the German Language Society will be having our Annual Stammtisch, held in Munchie Monkey! So what is Stammtisch exactly? It is not easily translated into English but it means something like "regular's table" or "regular get-together". So what do you do? You sit together and basically, you talk about anything you want. Of course, conversation goes hand in hand with food. So it will be an exciting time where you get to meet fellow members and talk about, basically anything! We will be having German Food as well, with a DJ on hand to play some music whilst the event is being carried out!

However, please note that this event is strictly for members only. If you are a non-member, you can sign up for membership when you come. Freshies pay $10, while the rest pay $8. Before you come, please RSVP by emailing us @ frag.mal.uns@gmail.com with your name, and also indicate if you are a beer drinker. Once again, the summarized details are as follows:-

We will be giving advice on administrative matters and also be answering any queries about the SEP and Immersion! Also, we will be providing German food and drinks for the event. Please do come down to attend and support us! It is a great opportunity if you are considering going for an immersion or exchange. Introducing Music Artist: Wir sind Helden

"Wir sind Helden" (translated "We are Heroes") is a German alternative rock band which debuted in 2002. It has often been considered similar to the "Neue Deutsche Welle" (new German wave). Their debut single "Guten Tag" reached #53 on the German singles charts and got significant airplay on MTV Europe, although the band did not yet have a record deal at that time.

As recommended by Wei'an (our Honorary General Secretary), the song below is "Wenn es passiert" (when it happens), released in 2006. Enjoy!
